2022 NFL Draft Scouting Report – Tyler Allgeier

RB, BYU
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 224 lbs
Class: rs-Junior

As a two-star recruit coming out of high school, Allgeier didn’t earn a single scholarship offer. BYU eventually offered him a spot as a preferred walk-on. After featuring sparingly as a freshman, Allgeier switched to linebacker for the 2019 season. He moved back to running back the following year when he also earned his scholarship.

His production has been outstanding ever since. He has racked up almost 3,000 rushing yards in his time with the Cougars, earning an Honourable Mention All-American nod in 2020 and being voted a Second Team All-American last season. Allgeier led the team in rushing yards in both seasons and led the FBS in 2021 with 23 rushing touchdowns.

Strengths

Allgeier’s best trait as a prospect is his contact balance. He has great size at 5’10” and 224 lbs, with enough power behind his pads to bulldoze through the defense. His ability to get small and force his way through traffic was hugely valuable and made him a reliable option in short yardage situations. Once he has momentum behind him he is also incredibly tough to bring down, with great leg churn to fight for additional yardage.

This all saw him put up some hugely impressive numbers over the last two seasons. Allgeier logged 1,847 yards after contact over the past two seasons, more than any other FBS running back. Over that period he averaged an incredible 4.4 yards after contact. He also forced an impressive 120 missed tackles on his 424 carries over that period. This is the kind of thing that translates well to the NFL level.

He pairs this with some outstanding vision. Allgeier shows great patience to his runs, understanding how to pace them to allow his blocks to set up. He is one of the best in the business at pressing the hole before planting his foot and cutting back. This translates to the second level too, and he moves smoothly for a bigger back. His ability to quickly react to the field in front of him and navigate defenders in the open field is excellent.

Allgeier also offers upside on passing downs. He is a confident and reliable pass protector, with good eyes to pick up free rushers and the core strength to withstand their attack. Whilst BYU didn’t use him heavily as a pass catcher, he was solid when called upon. He showcases reliable hands, with just three drops on 45 catchable targets over the past two seasons. He also had a tonne of success on screens, where BYU was able to take advantage of his vision and contact balance.

Weaknesses

Allgeier does have some limitations from an athletic standpoint. He isn’t the quickest runner and logged a 4.60 40-yard dash at the Combine. He doesn’t have much in terms of wiggle either and is fairly tight hipped. This limits his ability to shake defenders in the open field and makes him almost entirely reliant on his physicality to force missed tackles.

There will also be concerns about his ball security. Allgeier was careless with the ball through contact, resulting in six career fumbles. Perhaps the biggest worry with this is that four of these came in 2021 alone. He will need to do a far better job of taking care of the football if he is to earn consistent playing time at the NFL level.

Bottom Line

Allgeier has a strong record of collegiate production, with the vision and contact balance to translate this success to the NFL. He might be somewhat limited from an athletic standpoint and will need to improve his ball security, but the potential is there for him to be an above-average contributor for years to come.
